(The following story is a truth account related to me by Ohio Fox, and has been written here using her own statements, language, and vocabulary. The names in this account have been changed to protect the guilty. In her own words, “The story is the watch, but the story is much deeper, it’s about being at piece, and it’s about loving yourself enough to forgive even if they don’t. It’s not about them, it’s about you.”)
13 Years Old at the Big Dipper
I was 13 and I had lied to my mother and told her that me and my sister was goin’ to a track party. It was a party after a track meet and we was goin’ to stay all night with some friends. So I was going on an all nighter when I was 13 and she was okay with that. I had never lied to her before so she had no reason to believe that I was lying to her now. So we decided to stay out all night and there was only one place open and it was called the Big Dipper. So we go in there 1:30 or 2 o’clock in the morning playing the jukebox and ordering food and they called the law us. “What are these juveniles doing out at this time of night?”
That’s when I meet Jim Ashley. He’s new on the force and out to make a name for himself. At the time he was just a cop. He was a member of the Wellstone PD. There was another cop there with him.
So he’s like “what are you good girls doing out at this time of night?” And giving us all this crap. “You’re not supposed to be out here.” And we’re giving him attitude. When you’re 13 you think you know everything when really you don’t know nothin.
He wanted us to get into the back of his cruiser. My sister went without a scuffle but I didn’t. She willingly went in but I had a problem with it. And there was this big scuffle and I was give him argument. We was in the Big Dipper and he grabbes my arm and he was telling me “get in the back of the cruiser.”
And I’m telling him “you don’t tell me what to do.” and I spit in his face. This spitting happened in the Big Dipper before we got out to the car, and by the time we got out to the car he was really pissed. At 13 you think you know it all. I think he never forgot that incident– spitting in his face–I know he never forgot it.
